You are invited to attend a lunchtime seminar on "Raman Scattering, Abiotic Stress and Wicking" given by Professor Shekhar Sharma, Plant Health & Environmental Protection Branch of AFBI on Thursday 24 March 2016 at 1.30 pm in G5, AFBI Headquarters, Newforge Lane, Belfast.
The talk will focus on three interrelated work areas:
- Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for detecting low levels of food and environmental contaminants. The recently developed AFBI biosensor can identify different strains of chicken viruses and detect low concentrations of salicylic acid.
- Biostimulants can regulate response of plants to abiotic stress factors (water and heat) by up- and down-regulating signalling factors, such as salicylic acid.
- The factors determining movement of water in plants are complex and recent research within PHEP has developed a model system to evaluate wicking characteristics of fibre. The potential applications of the tools developed will be highlighted.
