The Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute (AFBI) is a world-class research organisation but has its roots firmly grounded in the agri-food sector in Northern Ireland. Many of AFBI’s staff have grown up through the sector in Northern Ireland, and the Institute takes its role in influencing and mentoring the next generation of potential agri-food scientists very seriously.
Simon Doherty, a Veterinary Research Officer based at AFBI Stormont, recently represented the Institute at a Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) networking event for science and careers teachers working in the Southern Education & Library Board (SELB). The event, which took place at the Canal Court Hotel in Newry in late May, was also attended by industry representatives from Bombardier, Moy Park, Almac, Norbrook and the College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), amongst others.
Speaking of the event, Simon said “Opportunities for leaders in the agri-food sector to talk to school teachers and careers advisors at events such as these are really important – for the teachers, they can gain an understanding about the needs of modern forward-thinking employers in the workplace; but it also allows us, as industry stakeholders, to learn more about what the topics the school science curricula are covering, what the expectations of school-leavers are, and the advice they are being given.”
A number of AFBI scientific and veterinary staff, including Simon, are volunteer Ambassadors of the UK-wide STEM Network (STEMnet) who take part in a variety of events and activities during the year, to promote greater uptake of STEM subjects by school children and university students.
