The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) recently hosted the Executive Committee of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy at AFBI Hillsborough. The group included leading figures from the anaerobic digestion and biomass sectors from 18 different countries.
IEA Bioenergy was set up in 1978 by the IEA with the aim of improving cooperation and information exchange between countries that have national programmes in bioenergy research, development and deployment. IEA Bioenergy currently directs ten major international tasks and AFBI’s Dr Peter Frost is involved, through the UK, in Task 37 - Energy from Biogas.
The group was welcomed to AFBI by Hillsborough’s Head of Branch, Dr Trevor Gilliland prior to the technical sessions with AFBI’s James Browne, Peter Frost and Chris Johnston. There were also on site visits to the anaerobic digester and biogas fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) engine where the visitors discussed AFBI’s work on co-digestion of grass silage with cattle slurry and the work on use of digestate as a biofertiliser.
Notes to editors:
AFBI carries out high quality technology research and development, statutory, analytical, and diagnostic testing functions for DARD and other Government departments, public bodies and commercial companies.
AFBI's Vision is “Scientific excellence in Northern Ireland … serving the world”.
