AFBI students and supervisors are getting ready for the 2017 Postgraduate Showcase ‘Sharing the Science’ which is to be held at AFBI Hillsborough, Large Park, Hillsborough, BT26 6DR on Wednesday 7 June.
This event follows on the success of the 2015 and 2016 AFBI Postgraduate Symposia which have been praised for the high quality of work by AFBI students.
Previous presentation winner Conor Dolan said ‘The AFBI postgraduate conference provided an important opportunity to present my scientific research to a diverse audience of academia, industry and policy makers. It was an important networking opportunity to build links with both academia and wider agri-food industry’.
This year AFBI will be taking a new approach to the traditional seminar. Effective communication of research findings to a range of audiences such as research funders and industry experts is an extremely important part of having a successful research career. To help students develop these skills, the event will kick off with a closed knowledge transfer workshop for students. This session will start with discussion of a range of communication techniques valuable to scientists, led by Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Network. This will be followed by Donal Griffin from Queen’s University Belfast focussing on the ‘elevator pitch’ who will work with students to help develop simple techniques to explain their research projects. The interactive workshop will conclude with a team task as students work together to develop innovative solutions to communicate the findings of some of our recent AFBI PhD projects.
The afternoon session will provide students with an opportunity to build on the skills picked up in the workshop and present their research findings to a range of industry experts, stakeholders and academic guests through both oral and poster presentations. The Showcase will end with an informal BBQ allowing attendees to network with other students, researchers and industry.
This is a fantastic opportunity to find out about the diverse range of postgraduate research within AFBI, strengthen existing collaborations and build new links for the future.
This event will be RSVP only and limited to 40 stakeholders. To avoid disappointment please book through EVENTBRITE as soon as possible
We look forward to welcoming you on the day.
