AFBI is pleased to announce the publication of three reports detailing results from its pesticide usage monitoring programme. These reports are in compliance with Statistics Regulation 1185/2009/EC and are accredited by the UK Statistics Authority as National Statistics.
The reports provide quantitative data on the post-registration use of plant protection products in agriculture and horticulture within Northern Ireland.
There is an increasing demand for pesticide usage data from government policy-makers, particularly in relation to the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC, which addresses pollution from urban waste waters and agriculture. This demand is likely to continue with implementation of the directive.
A considerable number of agricultural pesticides are included in the priority hazardous substances within this legislation. In addition, the proposed maximum allowable concentration of pesticides in surface and ground waters is exceedingly low (0.1µg/l). Consequently, it is important to have a better understanding of the pesticide usage practices and eliminate pollution at point sources. Ultimately, this should reduce the need for expensive extraction systems at water treatment plants.
