In recent years upland blanket bog has been recognized as a rich and multi-functional resource that contributes to many ecosystems’ services, including:
- Food production via extensive grazing
- Water quality via filtration through sphagnum moss
- Water regulation via water absorption and gradual release
- Biodiversity via habitat for flora and fauna
- Carbon storage via sequestration in peat
- Recreation via tourism
Achieving the optimal mix of ecosystems services and agreeing how to achieve a healthy peatland environment requires agreement between the many actors involved.
The symposium brought together approximately 65 participants representing a variety of perspectives to consider policy, ecology, practice, barriers, and solutions aimed at achieving peatland regeneration.
The event programme and associated presentations are available to download and share from this webpage.
The symposium was held as part of the DAERA E&I Behavioural Change in Hills and Uplands Farming (BeCHUF) Research Project.
