The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) recently hosted a visit from the Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-operative Society (LNFCS) to discuss the current DCAL funded research programme on Lough Neagh eels
Following a welcome from the AFBI CEO, Prof Seamus Kennedy, the group toured AFBI’s freshwater fisheries laboratories, facilities and equipment. The fishermen were given demonstrations of research into eel age determination, stomach content analysis and parasite identification.
There was much discussion of the various sampling designs of nets, boats and equipment. The practical approach where scientists and fishermen both appreciate what works (and what doesn’t) was clearly evident.
Lough Neagh eels were awarded the EU designation of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in October 2011. PGI is the same designation category that protects the naming of Parmesan Cheese or Champagne. The Group discussed working toward extension of PGI status to other fish species, and further developing science-based management plans for sustainable harvest of all the commercial fish species of Lough Neagh.
