Once all statutory tests are completed:
AFBI can potentially use these blood samples to screen for other production diseases, when promptly requested by the private veterinary practitioner to do so. The blood sample submitted should be sufficient to carry out some extra testing, providing it has a reasonable volume of blood.
- The veterinary practice should contact AFBI-Veterinary Sciences Division Diagnostic Unit in advance of arrival of such samples by emailing DSIBSample.Enquiries@afbini.gov.uk. A herd number and DAERA Test ID should be provided in this communication.
- An appropriately completed Diagnostic Submission Form signed by the vet will be necessary. The appropriate Cattle Health Scheme (CHS) submission form must be completed and signed by the vet and herd owner for any AFBI CHS testing. Any submission form must also include the herd number and related DAERA Test ID.
- The veterinary practice should promptly forward a scanned copy of the appropriate completed submission form to DSIBSample.Enquiries@afbini.gov.uk
- The submission form should accompany the samples to the initial testing laboratory.
- If a DAERA staff member is collecting the samples, please ask them to mark the paperwork and the box as samples needing further diagnostic testing.
- Samples can be used to test for BVDV, Johne’s (samples should be taken on the first day of the TB test), Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (for herds using marker vaccine, the test IBR gE marker vaccine should be requested), Leptospirosis, Neospora etc. Be aware that such samples would not be appropriate for biochemistry testing.
Once all initial tests have been completed, the samples will be transferred to VSD’s Diagnostic Unit, where they will be tested as soon as possible.
Samples cannot be tested until a signed submission form has been received from the submitting PVP detailing the further tests required.
A report with the results will be sent to the veterinary practitioner.
